Many people picked up on my comment that “as you drive from central London to Salford in Manchester the average value of a house falls by £3500 a mile”. Listeners called the BBC, I had an email from the More or Less program who check such facts and Twitter was busy asking if this could really be true.
I used the helpful Land Registry website to compare the value of homes in Central London (Kensington & Chelsea) with Salford in Manchester where I was heading to do a turn for BBC Breakfast. The 209 mile journey sees prices fall from an average of just over £1m to around £95k in Salford.
